Description
The title “Yearning” perfectly captures the emotional depth I aimed to convey with this piece. It emphasizes the deep sense of longing and the gradual fading of hope visible in the figure’s expression and posture. When I sculpted the elongated neck, I intended it to symbolize the extended duration of the wait—the feeling of reaching for something just out of grasp as time stretches on and hope begins to wane.
The fragile cotton in the figure’s hand is an important contrast to the darker, heavier elements of the sculpture. It reinforces the delicate nature of hope, how it feels almost weightless yet can easily unravel with the slightest tug. That fragility was something I wanted to express visually, as it speaks to the vulnerability we all feel when we’re waiting and watching for something that may never come.
Various textures and proportions allowed me to bring out the emotional tension in “Yearning.” The contrasts create a fragility that feels almost palpable as if the figure is balancing on the edge of holding on and letting go. For me, the piece resonates with the experience of waiting, of feeling hope slip away little by little, and the quiet desperation accompanying that journey.
