Description

The antler-like structures on the head are striking and immediately draw attention. I wanted them to have a delicate yet tangled appearance, almost like they were on the verge of breaking, while still projecting strength and resilience. This contrast plays against the strong, expressive features on the face, creating an interesting dynamic that feels alive. The exaggerated eyebrows and the textured surface of the face give it a distinct personality—almost as if the figure is caught in a moment of deep reflection or worry. The title, “Oh, Deer,” plays into this tension, reflecting both the physical characteristics of the sculpture and the emotional state it represents.

For me, this piece evokes a sense of vulnerability, where both the deer and people are subject to forces beyond their control. The external elements, like the antlers and the exaggerated expression, are powerful visual metaphors for fear. They suggest how fear often feels rooted in the environment around us, even though it’s frequently just a projection of our own minds. Through this sculpture, I wanted to explore how external conditions can shape our internal experiences, creating a dialogue between the visible and the unseen.
